Introduction / History

The Yetfa people inhabit the southern coastal region of Papua Province, Indonesia, particularly in Merauke Regency near the border with Papua New Guinea. Their native tongue, Yelmek, is part of the Papuan language family and continues to be spoken within the community, although Indonesian is increasingly used for schooling and trade. Historically, the Yelmek were semi-nomadic, subsisting on fishing, hunting, and small-scale gardening. Their geographic isolation helped preserve their cultural traditions, but contact with outsiders and gradual modernization have introduced new influences, including formal education and limited infrastructure.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Yetfa communities are typically small and located along rivers and coastal areas. Homes are built from locally sourced materials such as wood and palm leaves. Fishing remains the cornerstone of their diet and economy, complemented by gardening and gathering forest resources. Transportation and communication are limited, making access to healthcare and education challenging. While some younger individuals leave for urban centers to pursue schooling or employment, most families continue to live in rural villages, maintaining traditional customs and a communal lifestyle.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the predominant faith among the Yetfa, introduced through missionary work during the colonial era. Churches and Christian celebrations play a central role in community life. Nevertheless, traditional spiritual practices have not disappeared; rituals tied to nature and ancestral respect still occur, creating a blend of Christian and indigenous beliefs.

What Are Their Needs?

Medical care is minimal, leaving families vulnerable to illnesses that could be prevented or treated with proper facilities. Educational resources are scarce, especially in remote areas, which hinders literacy and vocational development for younger generations. Economic security is fragile because reliance on fishing and small-scale farming makes communities susceptible to environmental changes and fluctuations in local markets.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Yetfa people will develop a strong and living faith rooted in Scripture rather than nominal adherence.
Ask for perseverance and wisdom for those who are discipling and equipping local believers, so they can effectively share the gospel within their own culture.
Intercede for spiritual renewal among families and leaders, that they may find hope and unity in Christ while facing social and economic challenges.
